Cutting my teeth on vidicon and plumbicon cameras in 1980, my first exposure to solid state image sensors came about in 1988 right at the transitioning of the GE camera /sensor group to CIDTEC. I would learn the interfacing, post processing, and inner workings of the video chain of CID sensor based cameras. Unlike tube based products which were well established. Solid state sensor technology was emerging. The opportunity to take part, and contribute/design in silicon solutions were becoming a reality. My contributions at that time were from the camera side looking inward. The opportunity to design in silicon would come shortly after.
I joined as a founding partner of Photon Vision Systems (later acquired by Panavision) immediately after being read in on the initial ACS (active column sensor) patent and given the opportunity to transition my skill set to designing image sensors. My work included everything from 1x128 analog output linear arrays to 37mp 14bit / 3Gb/s >120fps sensors for Cinematography. Dozens of patent discoveries were submitted and awarded during this body of work.
With the sale on Panavision Imaging in December 2012, I founded Town Line Technologies, and my work continues on in developing new linear image sensors while keeping the lights on with contract Image sensor design, mixed signal IC’s, PCB design, and consulting in same disciplines.
I am very fortunate man to enjoy the love and support of a great woman. I follow my dreams wherever they may go, and am lucky for that they are reasonable pursuits. I believe in things much larger than myself, and anything worth having is worth working for. The attribute of picking one’s self backup, dusting off, and having at it again has been a defining one in my quest for living large and a life worth living.
